CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying Qatar 2022: TV, schedule, results, standings for South American Eliminatorias
Information about CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying Qatar 2022: TV, schedule, results, standings for South American Eliminatorias
South American qualifying to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has reached its 10th round of matches and there are some key head-to-head battles to keep an eye on.
Uruguay (15 points) hosts resurgent Colombia (13 points), and three points would be massive for either one of those teams as they look to ensure they finish in one of the top four spots to qualify directly to Qatar. They’re in direct competition for those places behind first-place Brazil and second-place Argentina.
Peru (8 points) and Chile (7 points) are two teams that want to reenter that conversation and at least put themselves within reach of the fifth position which would guarantee a World Cup play-in series. They face off in Lima’s Estadio Nacional for a match that will feel like a last-gasp attempt to resuscitate their fading World Cup hopes. The loser will have a near impossible road ahead.
Of the other frontrunners, Brazil (24 points) will be expected to maintain its perfect pace (eight wins from eight) when it visits last-place Venezuela (4 points). Ecuador (13 points) should come away with the full three points at home against Bolivia (6 points), barring a major surprise. Lionel Messi and Argentina (18 points) have a tougher exam when they travel to face Paraguay (11 points) which will not want to lose ground in its chase of a top-five spot.

How CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying works
It’s not complicated in South America. All 10 nations play in a round-robin format with each country playing the other nine teams at home and away (total of 18 matches). It’s three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for every loss.
After 18 matches, the top four teams in the standings qualify directly to Qatar 2022, while the fifth-place team will advance to an intercontinental playoff with a ticket to Qatar on the line.
